The English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), adopted in December 2007 as part of 19TAC Chapter 74, are:
- A set of standards developed to meet the needs of English language learners.
- They outline the instruction school districts must provide to ensure that English learners succeed in all academic content areas.
What is an I CAN statement?
- I CAN statements are simple sentences designed by teachers.
- They are based on different standards or learning objectives from the curriculum.
- They are written in student friendly language.
- I CAN statements break down lofty objectives into learning targets students can read and understand.
- They cover specific learning objectives and there can be more than one for each lesson.
